Westwood Man Scammed

Winnipeg Councillor Kevin Klein serving Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood

Winnipeg Police are advising the public of a scam that was recently reported. The victim was approached and offered gold jewellery for sale. After completing the transaction, the victim had the jewellery appraised and discovered the gold was fake.

During the evening of July 8, a 24-year-old man was walking in Westwood in the 3500 block of Portage Avenue when a man in a vehicle approached him. The suspect provided a fictitious story about needing money to help travel with his family to the Halifax area and displayed what he claimed was gold worth between $5,000 and $10,000. After hearing the story, the Good Samaritan offered to assist and purchased a significant number of gift cards for the suspect in exchange for the gold.

The victim has since learned that the gold jewellery provided to him was fake gold. As a result of the incident, police were notified, and members of the Financial Crime Unit are investigating.

Members of the public are requested to use caution when approached in this manner.
