WINNIPEG, MB. - On January 31, 2021, at 4 a.m., Winnipeg Police North District patrol officers arrested three individuals in the 100 block of Donan St. who were in the process of stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle parked in the rear lane. Two males, aged 23 and 28, and a 20-year-old female, all from Winnipeg, were charged with theft-related offences and released on Undertakings. On February 2, 2021, at 4:45 a.m., Winnipeg Police East District patrol officers responded to the 700 block of Regent Avenue for the report of two males stealing catalytic converters from vehicles in a residential parking lot. Several vehicles had been attacked and their catalytic converters removed. One male was hiding between vehicles in possession of tools and taken into custody, while the second male fled in a vehicle to evade police. Further investigation by the Property Crime Unit, led to the subsequent arrest of this suspect later that day. Two males, aged 36 and 38, were charged with theft-related offences and released on Undertakings. In January 2021, the Winnipeg Police received 77 reports online and in-person regarding the theft of catalytic converters. While it may not be visibly evident that a converter has been removed, it will be apparent upon operation, as the vehicle will suddenly make a loud roaring sound, similar to that of a faulty muffler. Damages in relation to these incidents cost approximately $385,000. Consider the following preventative strategies:
Park in a locked garage whenever possible
Park in well-lit public parking lots and parkades
Aftermarket clamps are available to purchase for additional protection
Scrap metal businesses are encouraged to contact police if individuals bring in an abnormal amount of these converters
