Ash Tree Removals to Begin Soon

Councillor Kevin Klein

WINNIPEG - The City of Winnipeg will begin the annual ash tree removals. This year work will be done in Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood (WEST of the Assiniboine Forest) and in the wards of St. James, Point Douglas, Mynarski, and Old Kildonan to remove dead and declining black ash affected by Cottony Ash Psyllid.

The Public Service said they expect to finish these ash removals by the end of the calendar year. Alliance Tree Care is the contractor who will be conducting this work. City policy is to chip all ash on site during the EAB beetle feeding/breeding period to reduce the risk of spreading EAB (which is difficult to detect, and therefore may also be present), so many of these trees will be chipped on site. Trees scheduled for removal will be marked with a purple dot. All residents directly affected by this removal program will receive a Tree Removal Courtesy Notice.

The Public Service informed us that replanting is expected to take place within 5 years of the trees’ removal.
