Holiday Crime Prevention Tips

The Winnipeg Police said late last week that they will show their presence at high-traffic shopping centres for the upcoming busiest shopping days of the year. Community Support Units will patrol parking lots to deter thieves from targeting unattended vehicles containing valuables and holiday purchases.

Police say, public awareness is essential in promoting safety and security for people and their belongings. Officers will enhance personal safety, security and share crime prevention tips for citizens frequenting the malls.

One way to protect your unattended vehicle and its contents is by participating in the WPS All Valuables Removed program. This program serves as a theft-deterrent by providing drivers with a checklist and reminder to remove valuables before leaving their parked vehicle. Officers will hand out a bright yellow card to place on your dashboard indicating: All Valuables Removed.

Property crime can be reduced when the police and community work collaboratively. In addition to proactive police patrolling, citizens can follow these crime prevention tips:

  • Remove valuables and shopping bags from view, including loose change and electronic devices.

  • Place a WPS “All Valuables Removed” placard on your windshield

  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.

  • Never leave your house keys in your vehicle.

  • Don’t leave identification documents and credit cards in your vehicle.

  • Keep your doors locked and windows closed.

  • Park in a lit area when possible

If you live in Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood I would be happy to mail you the card. Send me an email, KKlein@winnipeg.ca, with your full address. You can also print out a downloadable version of this card, by visiting this website:
