Celebrating the Sturgeon Heights Collegiate Boys Hockey Team

Tuesday, January 24, 2023 - Thanks to the Sturgeon Heights Collegiate boys hockey team for joining me today at the Manitoba Legislative Building. It was a chance to congratulate the team and present them with certificates for their success in the USA by winning the Colorado Cup.

Way to represent Kirkfield Park!!

If you know of a group, big or small, that deserves recognition in our community, please contact me directly at Kevin@KevinKlein.ca.

The team left Winnipeg on Dec 28 at 6:00am and drove to Rapid City the first day, stopping at Mount Rushmore the next morning on their way to Colorado Springs. They arrived in The Springs and played their first game of the tournament at 11:00pm at night following some delays in earlier games. The team then went undefeated through the rest of the tournament to win the Colorado Cup, playing their last two games at the Ed Robson Arena, home of the NCAA Tigers!

On Dec 31st the team also played a 6th game in four days by playing in an exhibition game against Cherry Creek high school, a top ranked team from the state. Although they lost 5-3, they showed a lot of grit by coming back from an early deficit to tie the game, 2-2 at one point.

During their trip, the team saw an NCAA game between Colorado College and Princeton University, saw an NHL game between the Avs and Vegas Golden Knights. The team also took some time to swing a golf club at a Top Golf in Denver.

Members of the team have been involved with some great work in the community including a food drive at Halloween, volunteering to help the Winnipeg Art Gallery set up and tear down for their annual gala event and a couple members of the team volunteer their time to coach a Jack Rabbits program on Saturday mornings.

More than half the team were also on the Championship High School Lacrosse team from last spring.
