Canada Gets a 30-Day Tariff Reprieve—Now We Get to Work!

This news provides temporary relief, but make no mistake: we are on borrowed time. Canada cannot rely on political deals made over the phone to shape our economic future. We must take control of our destiny. This serves as a wake-up call—an opportunity to implement the changes our country urgently needs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to X to announce that U.S. tariffs on Canada will be paused for 30 days following what he described as a "good call" with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The 25% tariffs, which were set to take effect on Tuesday, will not be enforced—at least for now. Trudeau also revealed plans to deploy 10,000 soldiers to "protect the border" as part of an agreement with Trump. Additionally, resources will be increased to tackle the influx of fentanyl into the United States, and a new U.S.-Canada joint strike force will concentrate on organized crime, fentanyl distribution, and money laundering.

This news provides temporary relief, but make no mistake: we are on borrowed time. Canada cannot rely on political deals made over the phone to shape our economic future. We must take control of our destiny. This serves as a wake-up call—an opportunity to implement the changes our country urgently needs.

For too long, Canada has taken its economic standing for granted. We have relied on others to dictate our future. We have expected stability without securing it. That must end now. The next 30 days are not a period to sit back and watch—it is a chance to strengthen our negotiating position, demonstrate our value, and ensure that no one, not even our closest ally, dictates our economic fate without consequence.

Time to Work, Not Celebrate

Some will say this reprieve is proof that diplomacy is working. That would be a dangerous assumption. This is not the time for rhetoric, political point-scoring, or complacency. This is a brief window to make our position stronger. If we fail to act, we will find ourselves back at the table with fewer options, fewer allies, and fewer opportunities.

Canada must use this time wisely. We must push forward with aggressive economic planning and self-reliance. We need to strengthen our energy sector, manufacturing, and trade agreements. We need to protect our workers and businesses from instability. This requires leadership, discipline, and action—not press conferences and vague promises.

Canada First—In Actions, Not Just Words

Canadians have not been patriotic enough in the past, but that has changed significantly over the last few days. We must maintain this momentum. We need to put Canada first—not just in words, but in actions. For too long, we’ve been complacent, assuming our resources and industries would always be respected on the global stage. Trump has given us an opportunity, whether we like it or not. The 30-day pause on tariffs is a gift, a warning, and a challenge all in one. If we fail to seize this moment, we’ll find ourselves back at the negotiating table in a weaker position.

This is why we must pressure our politicians. We cannot let them breathe a sigh of relief and return to business as usual. Now is the time for leadership, not political gamesmanship. The economy demands decisive action, not delays. Parliament remains prorogued until March, which is unacceptable. Politicians should be called back immediately to address these urgent issues. Let’s show President Trump we mean business, as should the Manitoba Legislature.

Tougher Action on Crime and Border Security

Canadians have been demanding tougher action on crime for over nine years, particularly regarding drugs. Now, there is no excuse. We must declare a war on fentanyl and organized crime. The Mexican cartels operating in Canada must be eradicated, and this cannot be a part-time effort. It must be a full-time, well-resourced operation. Canada’s law enforcement agencies need to be equipped with the necessary tools, personnel, and intelligence to dismantle these networks permanently. The stakes are too high to allow any further delays.

Canada has allowed far too many illegal immigrants to enter our country, and Canadians have been demanding action. Trump has now made it a priority. We need to take action to ensure those who are here illegally are sent back to their home country. We cannot afford to let our past inaction cost us our future and economy.

No More Delays—The Work Starts Now

In the business world, when a crisis arises, leaders do not hesitate. They strategize, take action, and resolve issues. Canada’s political class must adopt this same sense of urgency. This is our opportunity to strengthen our independence, security, and economic resilience. The pause in legislative activity is not only frustrating—it also undermines the obligation to act in the nation’s best interest.

This is not a time to let off the gas. Every business owner understands that second chances don’t come along often. We have a rare opportunity to strengthen our economy, renegotiate trade deals, and build a better future for our country. That means action now—not after the 30 days run out. That means standing firm against crime, investing in key industries, and ensuring that our economy is never again placed in a vulnerable position by a foreign power.

The reprieve is not a victory. It is an invitation to prove we deserve better. Let’s not waste it.
