AIR-1 Spots a Fire on William Avenue

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

During the early hours of June 19, 2020, the Winnipeg Police Service helicopter, AIR1, was on a routine patrol. At approximately 2:50 a.m., while passing over the Centennial Neighbourhood, the flight crew observed a significant fire at a multi-family residence located in the 500 block of William Avenue. The building was engulfed in flames, and people outside appeared to be attempting to alert other residents within the building.

The flight crew determined that the fire had not yet been reported and called for the deployment of Winnipeg Fire Paramedic units and additional police resources. WPS General Patrol units were in the area and quickly arrived on the scene. Officers arrived and began assisting by using fire extinguishers to clear flames to enter the building and search for others trapped inside. Police were able to help six residents in safely fleeing the house.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Units were able to ultimately suppress the fire. No injuries were reported, however, the building received significant damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
